Amsterdam, 27th June 2018. Dr Henry Robinson the CEO of Dynautics Ltd, a pioneering provider of intelligent technology to power unmanned marine missions presented the costs and benefits of various degrees of autonomy at the Autonomous Ship Technology Symposium in Amsterdam on 27th June 2018 and it was very well recieved.
This presentation addressed the practical, technical and economic implications of various degrees of autonomy. Autonomy can mean anything from a simple “heading-hold” autopilot to something vastly more sophisticated – and expensive. Full “autonomy” implies being able to solve whatever problems might arise. This includes a host of issues such as equipment malfunction and propeller entanglement, without human intervention. The cost of this capability needs to be more than matched by the value of achieving it. By way of example, this study considered the requirements for pipeline and reservoir surveys.
